Cam Newton gives 16-year-old fan a football, team asks for it back

When Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton(notes) scored his third touchdown in Sunday's game, he made a beeline to the 16-year-old girl in the back of the end zone wearing a shirt that said "Mrs. Newton" on the back.

Katie Brown had spent the previous night designing the T-shirt and, with the help of some fans sitting around her, had attracted the attention of the rookie superstar earlier in the game. Newton acknowledged her with a smile and a laugh. Now, he was running over to give her the ball he had just carried across the goal line.

"It was the most amazing moment," Brown told the Associated Press. The New Port Richie, Fla., teenager had become a fan of Newton's while watching him play at Auburn and had asked her father to take her to the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After telling her that he couldn't afford tickets, D.J. Brown surprised his daughter with four, front-row seats to the game.

"I thought he was going to do his Superman celebration like he normally does, but then all of sudden he started running over and pointed right at me," she said. "I was in shock. I thought, I must be in a dream."

She was quickly snapped out of it. That ball, you see, was used to score Newton's 13th rushing touchdown of the season, breaking the NFL record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. The Carolina Panthers equipment staff knew that and had an inkling that the Pro Football Hall of Fame may want the piece of memorabilia. So it was left to assistant equipment manager Don Toner to make a trade.

"I just asked her real nice, 'Would you mind exchanging that ball — we kind of need it,'" Toner told the AP. "And she was real sweet about it. She didn't hesitate. She was so excited she was trembling. She was just giddy about what had just happened."

Toner had grabbed a kicking tee, a game ball and four hats for the exchange. He says the team will also send her something in the mail. We hope it's something signed by Newton.

Brown didn't mind making the exchange.

"I honestly believe Cam deserves to have that ball because it was his record and his achievement." she said. "He should have it."

(November 2, 2011)— Quiksilver’s Kelly Slater clinched an historic and unprecedented 11th ASP World Title today in the cold and challenging waters of San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. Slater, 39, is the first surfer to achieve 11 ASP World Titles, an accomplishment spanning two decades of an astounding career during which he has dominated competitive surfing as both the youngest and oldest ASP World Champion.

“The 10th World Title seemed harder to me and felt like a 2 year journey—really it felt like 20 year journey to get to the 10th. This year that was done, and I could put it in the past. And there were questions about the 11th but it didn’t symbolize what 10 did for people. This year was a little bit under the radar and I felt like I started off fresh.” says Kelly. “Part of it is people always talk about my age and you know I’m 39, almost 40, and to me that’s literally just a number. You can prove people wrong and stay super healthy. I don’t see why at 50 I can’t be in better shape than I am now. If anything I’d like to try to represent that to people. I eat well and I talk about it and I walk the walk and it shows in my ability physically.”

Today was Slater’s inaugural competitive event in San Francisco, where he secured the 2011 ASP World Title during the third round of competition, which set him against Daniel Ross.

Despite missing July’s South Africa event and being challenged by a new field of opponents, Slater has had an impressive run in 2011, posting three victories (Gold Coast, Tahiti, Trestles) as well as two Runner-Up finishes (New York, Portugal) – a performance, in part, he attributes to the relief of clinching his 10th ASP World Title last season.

Kelly won his previous ASP World Championships in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010. His career victories also include 48 elite tour wins and two ESPN X Games gold medals.

Champion Kelly Slater Donates Winning Surfboard to National Museum of American History

Kelly Slater, 10-time Association of Surfing Professionals World Champion surfer, recently donated one of his winning boards to the sports collections at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Slater used the board to win the April 2010 ASP Rip Curl Pro tournament at Bells Beach, Australia. Later that year, he came from behind to capture the title in the Rip Curl Search in Puerto Rico for an unprecedented 10th ASP World Championship.

The surfboard, made of white fiberglass and sporting a blue wave design covered with sponsor stickers throughout, is currently on view in the museum’s first-floor Artifact Walls. It has a rubber pad at the back of the board for traction and three removable fins along the bottom.

“Over the past 20 years, his approach to surfing as a professional and dedicated philanthropist has changed how people surf and view the sport,” said Jane Rogers, curator, at the museum.

Born in Cocoa Beach, Fla., Slater became the most successful surfer in the world by age 26 by winning the most world titles. At 39, his career has garnered him a spot in the Surfing Hall of Fame as both the youngest and oldest world champion in any sport. In collaboration with surf apparel and accessory company Quiksilver and surfboard company Channel Islands, Slater has created his own line of surfboards, wetsuits and board accessories.

Magda Sayeg, founder of KnittaPlease, began by taking knitting out of the home and into the streets. The simple juxtaposition of this woven material placed within an urban environment has inspired a new generation of knitters who no longer view function as the sole purpose for knitting. This new approach to knitting questions the assumptions of a traditional craft while adding a previously unused material to the world of street art.

When Magda Sayeg began KnittaPlease in 2005, it was her response to the dehumanizing qualities of an urban environment. By inserting handmade art in a landscape of concrete and steel, she adds a human quality that otherwise rarely exists. KnittaPlease represents the present energy coming from knitting and more extensively weaving, while giving a nod to its powerful history. Her work has been recognized for its influence in street art as well as the craft of knitting. Magda Sayeg is based in Austin, Texas.

U.S. play Women’s World Cup in kit resembling nurse’s uniform

The U.S. began their campaign for their first Women's World Cup title since 1999 on Day 3 of the tournament and they did it in a new kit. The women are once again in their usual all-white home strip. But the new design, worn in their opening-match win against North Korea, already has some fans saying that it looks like a nurse's uniform.

When the new kit was first revealed in April, Dr. Jennifer Doyle of From a Left Wing summed up the problem critics have with it:

the Nike press release says, "The kit is designed specifically for the female athlete, to enhance the range of motion and create a uniquely feminine silhouette." But for anyone fearing that the nurse look isn't intimidating enough for a side aiming to win the World Cup for the first time in 12 years, the black away kit (which has the same design) is "inspired by the beautiful but deadly Black Widow spider." So, deadly Black Widow nurse spiders. Got it.

Whatever it looks like, it certainly didn't hurt their performance as they beat North Korea 2-0 -- the largest margin of victory so far in the tournament.

This generation of girls command much more than simple recognition. These six unique surfers are changing the sport. They turn heads and make jaws drop. They love life, and its shows. Together they embody all that women’s surfing has become. Leave a Message is a true testament to just how much this generation of surfers have changed their sport. This is a performance surf film, with an emphasis on performance. But beyond the groundbreaking aerials and long barrels is a message that transcends well beyond the lineup: enjoy what you do and do it to the fullest. Unintentionally, these girls have written a new script for women’s surfing. Deliberately, they’ve left their message.

Saturday, 6/18/2011, in Hanna Park the Florida Surfing Assoc. opens another new door for a very special group in society - the deaf. In groups of 3, using a push and surf style, there was a student, professional instructor and ASL signer going out into the water providing direct one on one constant supervision and instruction. This way the signer was able to communicate between the instructor and surf student to teach them how to surf and to ensure a fun time for all.

Vintage planes off U.S. 1 demolished

The "airplane graveyard," which once housed a few dozen vintage military planes for many years, is nothing more than a grass storage lot filled with metal debris today.

Metal salvage workers demolished the last vintage plane that sat in a lot off Avenue A just north of the St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections Office on Wednesday afternoon. A large crane grasped the shell of each plane within its claw and tore apart their wings and fuselage -- breaking down the planes to mere pieces.

"The planes were stripped of their stuff of value a long time ago," said Mark Cass, owner of Fort Myers-based Metal Recycling & Salvage LLC, the company hired to demolish the planes. "All that's left are the wings and the tail."

The acre-lot that can be seen from U.S. 1 just north of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office came to be known by locals as the "airplane graveyard" for many years. Well now that local landmark is listed for sale, Record archives show. The lot is listed for sale for $195,000 with RE/MAX 100 Realty in St. Augustine. The price dropped from $199,000 in March.

The Maryland-based company that owns the property, Chesapeake Airways, sells the hard-to-find vintage plane parts to customers all over the world. The planes are no longer made, so the parts must come from other out of commission planes that are still around.

Buyers used the parts from the planes that were stored in St. Augustine to refurbish their own aircraft.

Chesapeake Airways owner, Charlie White, could not be reached for comment.

The S-2 Tracker military planes built in the '60s and '70s would take off from aircraft carriers and flew mainly off shore. They were also used by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and Canadian Forestry to fight against wild fires.

A previous article written in March said the planes were going to be moved from the property in the coming months. At some point those plans changed.

"I'm actually doing this job for free to get the scrap metal," Cass said.

Cass said it will take nearly two weeks for his crew and local contractors to break down all the planes and clear the metal.

MIAMI – In the instant the clock bled to 0:00, LeBron James’(notes) instinct hadn’t been to preen, flex and degrade the moment with a barrage of I-told-you-so’s. He had come, a year in the making, crashing down on the Boston Celtics.

And yet before James leaped into the air Wednesday night, before he found Dwyane Wade(notes) for a long, long embrace, he sought an empty swath of basketball court amid the bedlam of a 97-87 Miami Heat victory over the Boston Celtics. He dropped to his knees, bowed his head and turned his eyes away from the pulsating lights and party music. Finally, LeBron James had beaten them. All alone on the floor, he looked like a man soaked in some sort of salvation.

Beating Boston didn’t inspire bravado out of James, but contrition.

“I couldn’t do it by myself against that team,” James said. “I apologize for the way it happened, but I knew this opportunity was once in a lifetime.”

As moments to make an apology go, it probably won’t please Cleveland that James chose the end of the victorious conference semifinal series that he lost for them a year ago. For all his talent and regular-season productions, this has been a year of failures when everyone’s been examining him most closely. James deserved the criticism that had come his way a year ago. He had earned it, but he had earned this victory with 33 points and his part in a hellacious defense.

In his exit of Cleveland, James failed miserably. Beyond the infomercial on cable television, his enabled behavior had spiraled behind the scenes in Cleveland. And here, James found a stronger organizational structure, but a sluggish transition to winning big games with big plays.

And still, in pro sports today, he’s the next iconic figure expected to win a championship to validate his greatness. With the way James and Wade huddled together here, they need to win several championships. Of course, the Heat can win only one this season, and they’re coming hard for it now. Boston fell apart with Rajon Rondo’s(notes) back and elbow, with Kevin Garnett’s(notes) tired legs and Jermaine O’Neal(notes) rushing to the locker room for treatment. The final two minutes were something straight out of Pat Riley’s wildest dreams. The game was tied 87-87, and the series threatened to return to Boston with the Celtics trailing 3-2.

Together, James and Wade, who finished with 34 points, were magnificent. “Those two guys are monsters,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

The ending came like a jackhammer out of James in the final minutes – with 10 consecutive points to end the game. As closers go, James was Mariano Rivera breaking bats on Wednesday. Out of nowhere, the Heat delivered a torrent of 16 consecutive points to end the game, and release the Celtics’ grip on the game.

“In order for me to move on with my career, we had to go through them,” James said.

For some, this turned into too much of a celebration for a conference semifinal. Truth be told, it spoke of the Heat’s respect for the Celtics. As much as this partnership was unprecedented, it was spawned out of Boston’s ability to make a Big 3 the freshly minted standard for championship success. Boston inspired so much of the reasons James, Wade and Chris Bosh(notes) came together.

As thirtysomethings the Celtics had come together in trades. As twentysomethings, the Heat were a creation of free agency. Four years ago, the Celtics had such a breezy regular season. “We went through a seamless year,” Rivers said. “People actually liked us. We hadn’t gone through anything.”

It’s so much of the reason why the Atlanta Hawks pushed the Celtics to seven games to start the ’08 playoffs. The Heat’s struggles turned out to fortify them, test resolve and commitment. Rivers used to groan to his assistant coaches about the criticism of the Heat, because, he said, “I thought it helped them.”
